Frank Sinatra Autographs
Collectors treasure genuine Frank Sinatra autographs. Beginning early in his long career Sinatra was a universal heartthrob. When Sinatra toured the country with the Harry James band, young adults crowded around the bandstand, swooning over the handsome singer and requesting autographs that Sinatra readily provided. Sinatra's musical career blossomed when he played with the Tommy Dorsey band, and then with Benny Goodman.
From the 1940s through the early 1950s his popularity continued to escalate. His smooth voice and good looks made him a celebrity musician and many fans around the world coveted his autograph. Many autographs from Frank Sinatra obtained during this period are on album pages or sheets of paper. Sinatra's autographs on blank paper usually sell for a few hundred dollars. Signed publicity photos from this period are rare and highly desirable, and sell for considerably more than autographs on slips of paper.
Sinatra proved that he was equally talented as an actor. In 1953, Sinatra won an Academy Award for his performance in the film "From Here to Eternity." During the decade of the 50s, Sinatra began a long-term relationship with Capital Records. As his popularity rose, his accessibility to fans for in-person autographs diminished.
Fortunately, Sinatra signed many contracts and legal agreements that were retained by agents and studios. Legal documents with Sinatra's authentic autograph have eventually surfaced on the autograph market. Autographs by Sinatra on legal agreements are most likely to have his genuine signature. However, they are most likely to be among the most expense format of his autograph for collectors, ranging from a few hundred dollars and a few thousand dollars. Contracts bearing Sinatra's autographs from his roles in "From Here to Eternity" and "Von Ryan's Express" command many thousands of dollars.
Beginning in the 1960s, Sinatra's accessibility for in-person autographs became few and far between. Sinatra and his "rat pack" associates (Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Joey Bishop) attracted large audiences at the Las Vegas casinos. But Sinatra's personal contact with fans requesting has autograph been very limited. A few examples of photographs of all the "rat pack" that have all of their signatures have appeared on the autograph market.
Only a handful of checks signed by Frank Sinatra have become available to collectors. The number of autograph requests Sinatra received during the latter part of his sensational career was overwhelming. A succession of secretaries employed by Sinatra, including Gloria Lovell, became adept at mimicking Sinatra's signature and signed many photographs on behalf of their boss.
The dominant letters in Sinatra's autograph include "F" in "Frank" and "S" in "Sinatra." The individual letters in the remainder of his autograph are relatively small in size, sometimes barely discernible. Forgeries of Sinatra's autograph are common, especially in photographs and on blank pages. Serious collectors need to pay considerable amounts to obtain a genuine Sinatra autograph. However, as long as his recordings are played and his movies seen by future generations, Sinatra's autograph will continue to be coveted by his dedicated fans.
