Rough walking in Tabernas

People have been walking in these desert regions for many years now. They never fail to provide excitment and interest and enthusiasm never wanes for this spectacular walking terrain.

The latest foray into the wild and dramatic desert land near Tabernas came a few days ago. The Spanish Highs team have developed a great full day’s desert walking tour taking in some of the very best bits. The area is characterised by dry valleys (ramblas) and steep sided ravines. Contrastingly, some ramblas are lush with green vegetation especially bamboo and make for difficult walking.

Followed by some of the most important of these ramblas before breaking out onto open hillsides and cutting cross-country, scrambling up and over ravines. Exciting stuff but nowhere dangerous!

This area is also famous for the shooting of the "Spaghetti Westerns" and a walking trip to the desert can be combined (for the kids, of course!) with a visit to the film studios and sets.Due to the nature of the terrain we can "tailor" our day walks to the abilities and requirements of our guests. Long multi-day traverses require a certain amount of endurance as the going can be rough and trackless.

After following in the footsteps of Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef as, en route, you visit some important film locations from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, “For a Few Dollars More” and “A Fistful Of Dollars”. Both “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” had locations here too that the tour visits.

Well worth a visit if you happen to be in the Almeria region of southern Spain.

One of the beauties of the spaghetti western genre is that there were seldom any clearly defined Good or Bad Guys. This helped to keep the audience guessing as to the ultimate outcome of the film, thereby increasing the entertainment value tenfold. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Kid Vengeance One of Cannon Films' two 1976 Italian-Israeli co-productions starring Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett (Gianfranco Parolini's Pistola di Dio was the other), this spaghetti western was actually shot in the Middle East by American director Joseph Manduke. Pop star Garrett plays Tom, a teenager who teams with a black gunfighter named Isaac (Jim Brown) to avenge his family. Van Cleef is known to one and all as Bandit Turned Sheriff. Actually, a more appropriate cognomen would be Bandit Turned Sheriff But Still a Bandit, since Van Cleef only pretends to reform so that he can steal a cavalry payroll. Since it's hard to watch Beyond the Law with a straight face to begin with, the producers wisely decided to turn this spaghetti western into a semi-comedy. Released in Italy in 1967 as Al Di La Della Legge, Beyond the Law was distributed in the US in 1971. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Death Rides a Horse Bill (John Phillip Law) grows up to seek revenge on the gang that killed his parents. He meets up with Ryan (Lee Van Cleef), a veteran gunslinger seeking his own revenge for the ones who put him in prison. The two proceed to shoot everything that moves in this violent spaghetti western. Bill eventually discovers Ryan was there when his parents were killed and is torn between killing Ryan and letting him ride off into the sunset. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi God's Gun One of two 1976 Italian-Israeli co-productions starring Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett (Joseph Manduke's Kid Vengeance was the other), this spaghetti Western stars Van Cleef in a dual role as twin brothers. One of the brothers, Father John, is gunned down by the ruthless Sam Clayton (Jack Palance), allowing Sam's gang to take over Juno City. Young Johnny (Garrett) crosses into Mexico to convince the priest's twin, a retired bounty hunter named Louis, to strap on his guns one more time and save the town. Van Cleef is compelling, even in his somewhat laughable wig, and the familiar cast also includes Richard Boone and Sybil Danning, but it somehow misses the mark.
