Spaghetti Western Trilogy
Spaghetti Western Trilogy

The Italian Film Industry
This article gives the analysis of the Italian film industry in general and then goes on to the film “Cinema Paradiso". In 1942 there was screened “Four Steps in the Clouds†directed by Blasetti. This film is about a humble employee and it is regarded as the first work of Italian neorealism. When the conditions of the country became improving another genre appeared. It is called “pink neorealismâ€. Before the so-called "boom" of the 1960s talented actresses became real celebrities owing to this genre that helped then to reveal their professional abilities. Among them are: Sophia Loren, Silvana Pampanini, Silvana Mangano, Gina Lollobrigida, Lucia Bosie, Eleonora Rossi Drago, Claudia Cardinale, and Stefania Sandrelli.
Soon after that pink neorealism stayed only in the history with the appearance of the new genre called “the Commedia all'Italiana†or “Italian Comedyâ€. “Italian Comedy†is a unique genre that is built on the humoristic line of serious and important social topics. At this very time, a Neapolitan actor famous as the main Italian comic appeared. His films, usually with the participation of such actors as Peppino De Filippo and Mario Castellani, were full of satire and were popular among the spectators. People loved his films, his mimic expressions and his gesture. All this created an inimitable personage and made this man one of the most beloved Italians in his own country.
The genre “Spaghetti Western†appeared almost at the same time and achieved great success in Italy and in the whole world. These films differed by their vivid cinematography and low budgets. One of the reprehensives of the genre is Sergio Leone with his “Dollars Trilogyâ€. The 1980’s is a period of a long crisis in Italian cinematography. “The Last Emperor†by Bertolucci is an important work and is a winner of 9 Oscars. At the same time films of little artistic value became very popular in Italy. The actors that helped this success are: Gloria Guida, Lino Banfi, Alvaro Vitali, Diego Abatantuono and Edwige Fenech. Nowadays the new generation of directors has helped return Italian cinema to a healthy level. The example of these changes is the new version of the film “Cinema Paradisoâ€. In 1990 its director Giuseppe Tornatore won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. The article briefly analyzes the history of Italian cinema, its popularity at home and abroad. It provides an overview of the Italian cinema and its description of Italy and its people.

Spaghetti Westerns $18.99 They are tough. They are mean. They are the fastest, coolest gunslingers of the 1960s, and they don't talk much. They are the heroes of the Italian Spaghetti West and they changed the Western forever. Clint Eastwood's poncho-clad, cigar smoking Man With No Name is the enduring symbol of the genre and his Dollars trilogy with Sergio Leone reinvented action cinema, adding a European freshness to the time-worn Western myths. But Leone and Eastwood weren't the only hombres to saddle-up and head west, and this guide rounds-up and reviews the best of a very wild bunch, including perennial cult classics Django, The Big Gundown, Django Kill, and They Call Me Trinity. He also charts the Spaghetti Western careers of actors like Lee Van Cleef, Terence Hill, and Klaus Kinski as they rode the trail to international success. As well as an introduction to the genre, 31 of the best Spaghetti Westerns are analyzed in detail and there is a comprehensive multi-media reference section. |

Spaghetti Western: The Ennio Morricone Collection $11.99 Full performer name: Original Soundtrack/Ennio Morricone.Anyone who thinks that Ennio Morricone's best work in the spaghetti Westerns is centered in Sergio Leone's "Man With No Name" trilogy hasn't heard this delightful volume, which assembles the composer's music for nine Italian Westerns made between 1964 and 1972. There's not a dull note of music anywhere in here, and quite a bit of it is fascinating on an intellectual and musicological level. Morricone is known for his long, Puccini-like melodic lines and his use of wordless male choruses, whistling, and electric guitars to carry a melody, but on the early scores here, he uses solo trumpets and reed instruments (especially the oboe) -- clearly "The Slaughter" from A Gun for Ringo owes something to Dimitri Tiomkin's scoring for Rio Bravo. The title theme from At Times Life Is Very Hard, "Isn't That Fate" is, by contrast, an amalgam of pop and classical music, like an air freshener commercial that suddenly takes a detour through Giuseppe Verdi territory and gives more than a wave to Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid." "McGregor's March," from 7 Guns for the McGregors, seems like a military march version of the old "Texaco theme" ("we are the men from Texaco..."), re-scored for heavy brass and pipes, with a whistled break. And other title themes resemble mid-'60s Euro-pop music. There are several songs here that are noteworthy as broad, satirical expressions of the Western ethos: "Angel Face," "A Gringo Like Me," and "Lonesome Billy" are parodies of songs like "High Noon," sung in a declarative style midway between Hollywood and the operatic stage, and they have to be heard to be fully appreciated. ~ Bruce Eder |
