John Wayne Autographs

John Wayne autographs are hot!  Despite the passage of years since his last movie, The Shootist in 1976, John Wayne still commands an audience of movie buffs and autograph collectors.

Wayne's career began in silent movies in the 1920s.  However, Wayne did not become a star until 1939 when he played Ringo Kid in the movie Stagecoach directed by John Ford.  After that, Wayne gained iconic status for his masculine image, swaggering walk, and tough talk.

John Wayne signed many contracts and portrait photographs.  The rarest form of his signature is his birth name of "Marion Morrison."  On occasion, catalogs of autograph dealers offer high school yearbooks from Glendale Union High School in Glendale, California, are found that are signed with his birth name.  Contracts from television appearances and movie contracts occasional appear on the autograph marketplace.  John Wayne's television contracts for his many specials and variety shows that have his signature are typically sold for hundreds of dollars.

The movies Wayne made under the direction of John Ford have special significance because he best remembered for his roles in these Western Movies.  Contracts related to Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950), are avidly sought by serious collectors of John Wayne memorabilia.

Wayne also played the role of U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.  Wayne's Academy-award winning performance makes his signature on anything associated with this movie particularly desirable for autograph collectors.  Contracts that Wayne signed for his participation in these movies often sell in the many thousands of dollars.  However, check reprints with John Wayne's signature can appear like original memorabilia.

Although John Wayne signed his full name on contracts and publicity photos, he often signed his name as "Duke" for close friends and co-workers.  A John Wayne fan would need an autograph on a photo or letter with the name "Duke" to have a complete collection of autograph examples from John Wayne.  Wayne attempted to satisfy his legion of autograph-seeking fans by offering calling cards with his full name imprinted on the back of the card.

The value of John Wayne autographs has escalated as generations of fans avidly collect his signature.  John Wayne's signature is far from being scarce as he appeared in more films (over 250) than any other major Movie Actor.  But demand for John Wayne autographs has placed it among the most desirable of Hollywood stars.
